Afrobeat.
Maizon is a Zimbabwean afro jazz musician, song writer, a masterful story teller and lyricist. He grew up as part of CHIPAWO (children workshops on performing arts) working with Tisa Chifunyise, the wife of Steven Chifunyise. He studied ethnomusicology at the Zimbabwe College of Music and worked as music instructor and arts educator. He was a founding member of Oliver Mtukudzi’s “Pakare Paye” ensemble where he played with the Doctor himself and his son Sam Mtukudzi.
In 2016, Maizon formed the afrocentric group Ancient Tribes. After winning a second position in the national “Chibuku Road to Fame” music competition, they have since released songs like “Majurumbwe” and “Tamari” which are current radio favourites. Last year they released their debut album “Pfumvudza“.
Maizon is a pan Africanist. To him pan africanism means the global unity of African people with Africa as the basis. His music or songs are derived from a profound sense of dignity and social awareness, confronting issues of poverty, dispossession and the rights of ordinary people.
